Handcrafted in Hangzhou by artisan Haibin, this traditional bamboo whisk (chasen) is made using carefully selected mountain bamboo. Each strand is carved by hand with traditional blades, bent into shape through flame-finishing, and polished to preserve the bamboo’s natural elasticity.
Haibin – Artisan of Bamboo and Tea
With 30 years of bamboo craftsmanship, Haibin bridges the worlds of Chinese and Japanese tea culture.
He studied Song Dynasty Diancha techniques—the origin of matcha—and revived ancient whisk styles with precision.
Trained in Japanese chasen-making, he now integrates methods from various tea schools to form his own refined approach.
Each whisk reflects a harmony of tradition, history, and skilled hands.
Crafted from naturally aged mountain bamboo
Entirely hand-split, carved, shaped, and polished
Traditional deep-toned cotton binding for a stable grip
Smooth, natural surface finish, free of synthetic coatings
Each piece individually crafted by artisan Haibin, not mass-produced
Although “Hyappondate” literally translates to “100-prong style,” it does not denote an exact prong count.
In traditional tea ceremony craftsmanship, Hyappondate typically refers to whisks with approximately 72 to 80 prongs, designed to offer a balanced combination of flexibility, durability, and performance.
This naming tradition reflects the functional style and heritage, rather than strict numerical precision.
This whisk is ideal for preparing usucha (thin tea), producing a fine, elegant foam, and is also suitable for preparing koicha (thick tea) if needed.
Crafted in the same workshop, each bamboo tells a different story.
Bright, warm, and classic.
The most widely used style in tea ceremonies.
A neutral tone that complements any chawan.
Deep-toned, elegant, with natural markings.
Preferred by tea masters who enjoy a richer visual contrast.
Each whisk has a unique grain and hue.
"Every bamboo strand is hand-carved, polished, and flame-finished,
preserving the tactile feel, elasticity, and ceremonial elegance of tea."
