A rare and wonderfully charming antique locket dating to the mid 19th century, created in the form of a miniature globe.

Created from gold cased base metal, the spherical pendant has been hand enamelled in soft shades of white and pink to represent the Earth's continents and oceans. The result is a delightful and highly decorative interpretation of the world, reflecting the Victorian fascination with travel  and discovery.

The globe opens through the centre into two hemispheres, revealing a hidden compartment within. Lockets such as this were often used to house treasured keepsakes, tiny mementoes, or locks of hair. Resulting in a deeply personal object that could be carried close to the wearer.

There is something particularly appealing about the combination of novelty and sentiment found within this piece. Beautifully made and surprisingly detailed, it is both a wearable jewel and a fascinating conversation piece.

The enamel remains in very good antique condition, with only minor losses and wear consistent with its age and construction. The globe continues to open and close securely so is ready to be worn and used again.
