Benrinnes distillery is tucked away at the foot of Ben Rinnes mountain in the heart of Speyside, first established in 1826 by Peter McKenzie. Despite its Speyside postcode, Benrinnes makes whisky that tastes nothing like a typical light, fruity Speyside malt. It is renowned for a robust, meaty, and slightly sulphury spirit character that puts it in the same stylistic camp as Mortlach and Cragganmore. Until 2007, Benrinnes used a unique partial triple distillation process combined with worm tub condensers kept very cold — both contributing to that distinctive heavy, savoury character. This full-bodied spirit pairs beautifully with Oloroso sherry casks, which amplify the dark, meaty richness.
Adelphi is widely regarded as one of today’s premier independent whisky bottlers. This 14 Year Old Benrinnes was matured in a refill Oloroso hogshead, giving it generous layers of dried fruit, candied peel and baked apple.
Nose: Dried fruits and cinnamon lead, joined by a faint whiff of shoe polish. Borderline sherry bomb territory. Floral notes appear with time, alongside a hint of fresh barley juice.
Taste: Full bodied and now decidedly sugary sweet. Waves of ripe, fresh and juicy fruits flood the palate.
Finish: Medium long. Bursting with juicy fruit chewing gum sweetness. Bright, lively and exuberant.
